A New Variety of Chlamys Nobilis Reeve, Namoa Golden Scallop,Was Bred by STU

9 April 2015---Our university has bred successfully a national aquaculture variety, Namoa Golden Scallop, for the first time. bred and promoted in the South China Sea and the East China Sea, Namoa Golden Scallop,a variety of Chlamys nobilis Reeve, has been listed in the 25 aquatic varieties passed in the 5th session of the National Aquatic Protospecies and The 2ndImproved Variety Approval Committee conference.(its Varieties of registration number :GS-01-009-2014)This news is released in the No. 2242 announcement from Ministry of Agriculture in March 30th.

The research team led by Professor Zheng Huaiping, Institute of Marine Biology, College of Science ,Shantou University, undertook the breeding process of N Namoa Golden Scallop, which went through 4 generations of artificial directional selection and 2 generations of breeding demonstration before Namoa Golden Scallop were bred successfully. This new variety has three advantages:

1.Their golden yellow shells, adductor muscles, mantles give people visual pleasure.

2.They contain plenty of carotene, especially in their muscular tissues, which is 10.8 times more than the ordinary ones.

3.They have greater ability to resist low temperature. When the temperature is as low as 10℃,they can resist it for a longer time, up to 2.9 times than other ordinary species.

After the demonstration of breeding in some places like Zhangpu and Dongshan in Fujian, Raoping, Shantou, Shanwei and Shenzhen in Guangdong,NamoaGoldenScallopprove to be an economic success, higher market price for 4 to 5 RMB than the ordinary ones and higher output value per mu for 6000 to 9000 RMB. Both consumers and scallops farmers are satisfied with them. Undoubtedly, the successful breeding ofNamoaGoldenScallopplays an important role in relieving the pressure of the shortage of good varieties in scallop aquaculture industry and upgrading the species in scallop aquaculture industry in Southern China.
