Marine Biology (Doctoral station and master station)
The marine biology discipline in Shantou University received the conferral rights of maters and doctors in 2003.The research contents of the marine biology cover the fields of marine botany(Algae, physiological and biochemical and ecology, Algae resource utilization technology and Algae in developmental biology and plant breeding),marine zoology(nutrition and feed of aquatic animals Nutrition and Feed of Aquatic Animals, Marine biological breeding and genetic breeding and Aquatic animal immunization and disease),marine ecology(cultural ecology, Ecotoxicology and safety of aquatic products) and marine biotechnology(Marine functional genomics, utilization of Marine biological active substance separation technology).
We aim to cultivate our graduate students by systematic study to equip them with stable basic theories and systematic professional knowledge,with the ability of undertaking the jobs of teaching,scientific researching,exploration of technology and technological management independently.Hopefully, they will become the highly specialized elites in the marine science and other related subjects in China,and are capable of engaging in Marine science and some other related fields by teaching, scientific researching, technology researching and senior management in institutions of higher education, scientific research institutes, governments and enterprises and institutions and other departments.
Environmental sciences（master station）
The master station of Environmental Science of Shantou university was established in 1995.Environmental Science relies on marine biology, its researching areas cover the disciplines like Marine environmental chemistry, Environmental pollution monitoring and management, Environmental toxicology, Environmental modification ,Aquaculture environment ecology and so on. Besides undertaking basic environmental researches in the laboratories, we also investigate and administer the pollution(for example, eutrophication, heavy metal pollution, persistent organic pollutants ,etc.) about rivers and marine environment in the east of Guangdong province and some surrounding regions as researching sites, so as to provide theoretical basis and statistic support to ecological environment and resources protection and policy making. Through a process of systematic training and learning, the postgraduates are supposed to master a foreign language, stable basic theories and extensive professional knowledge about environmental science, as well as advanced technologies and methods about solving practical problems on environmental science. Hopefully, they will become the creative ones who can take on the work of teaching, scientific research, technology research and development, science and technology management independently, and also become professional and technical elites in the field of environmental science and related areas in our country.
Hydrobiology（master station）
Hydrobiologyrelies on biology, its main research directions include: Administration and protection of aquatic resources, Aquatic economic animal and plant breeding and genetic breeding, Aquaculture animal immunization and disease control and prevention, Aquatic animal nutrition and feeding, Aquaculture environment monitoring and evaluation, Quality and safety of aquatic products and so on. Graduates are able to engage in aquatic organisms work including teaching, scientific research and senior management in colleges and universities, research institutes, enterprises, etc. The education and training for postgraduates are mainly held in Marine biology institute of Shantou university or biological and Guangdong provincial key laboratory of Marine biotechnology. Postgraduate students would be awardedMaster of Sciencedegrees.
Environmental engineering（master station，bachelor's degree）
The master station of Environmental engineering depends on Marine Biology Institute of Shantou university, specializing in marine environment and sewage treatment, its main research areas include water pollution control, marine environmental management and environmental pollution renovation, etc. The masters of engineering that we aim to cultivate are supposed to be practical, compound and high level environmental engineering and engineering management elites for the management departments of ocean system, engineering construction and environmental protection. The education and training for our postgraduates of environmental engineering are mainly conducted in the key laboratory of Marine life technology of Guangdong province, Marine biology institute of Shantou university and Department of Biology. Meanwhile, this discipline has built good cooperative relationship on talents cultivation, technology popularization and scientific research with some related public institution, research entities and the environmental protection enterprises, like The state oceanic administration of the south China sea branch, Shantou Marine and fisheries department, sewage treatment plant of Shantou, City Environmental Protection Bureau of Shantou, Aquatic products research and development center in Niutianyang, Brackish water ecological aquaculture and aquatic productsprocessing demonstration base of university-industry cooperation, Subtropical waters belzungiaaquaculture engineering technology research center, Guangdong Yuequnlimited liability company of research and development of Marine organisms, Sea prosperous aquaculture base co., LTD in Nanao and so on. Those institutes, departments and companies provided our master station with scientific research strength and practice base, largely improve the business level and practical ability of our students.
