This talk will highlight our team's recent advancements in the research and development of cutting-edge fiber devices. It is organized into two main sections: the development of fiber-optic sensors and the innovation of multi-material, multifunctional fibers for wearable technology.
The field of fiber-optic sensors has seen significant interest due to their numerous benefits including immunity to electromagnetic interference, compact and lightweight design, high sensitivity, quick response times, and the ability of multiplexing. These attributes enable the precise detection of minute changes in temperature, pressure, strain, refractive indices, vibration, and biochemical processes. Our discussion will primarily cover our contributions in design, fabrication, and sensing applications of these devices, specifically via the use of fiber Bragg gratings, in-line fiber-optic interferometers, dual-core fibers, and microstructured optical fibers.
Moreover, the area of wearable electronics, particularly those crafted from fiber materials, is experiencing a surge in attention. Unlike traditional rigid electronics, these fiber-based alternatives offer significant advantages for future electronic innovations due to their flexibility, stretchability, and compatibility with existing, economical textile manufacturing techniques. Our presentation will delve into our developments in energy-generating and storing fibers, including fiber batteries and piezoelectric fibers, along with their integration into wearable fabrics.
