报告摘要:The global fluvial sediment fluxes have undergone significant changes due to the combined impacts of climate change and human interventions. Notably, sediment fluxes have exhibited an upward trend in headwater regions characterized by high mountains. However, the transportation of this increased sediment to the oceans has been impeded by the construction of numerous hydropower dams. Consequently, it becomes imperative to implement regulations such as sluicing and flushing to augment sediment fluxes towards coastal areas. Using the Mekong River as an example, we propose a reassessment of the prevalent utilization of large dead storages in dam designs and advocate for the implementation of smaller dead storages. Such a shift would alleviate sediment starvation in downstream regions, thus providing a buffer against sinking deltas and relative sea level rises.
