The Department of Biology was established in 1982, and it first enrolled undergraduates in 1985. Currently, the faculty of the Department of Biology and the Ocean Science Research Institute are integrated into the Ocean and Life Discipline, which undertakes the task of talent cultivation and teaching platform construction. The department offers two undergraduate majors, biotechnology, and marine science, both of which are national-level first-class undergraduate major construction points. Biotechnology is a key major in Guangdong Province, while biology is a key disciplinary advantage in Guangdong Province, biochemistry and molecular biology is a key disciplinary feature in Guangdong Province, and marine science is a key disciplinary focus in Guangdong Province. The department has a doctoral degree program in biology and a master's degree program in biology, a doctoral degree program in marine science, a master's degree program in marine science, and a postdoctoral research station in biology, forming a complete talent cultivation system of "undergraduate-master's-doctoral-postdoctoral". The department has teaching platforms such as the Guangdong Provincial Biology Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center, the Guangdong Province Innovative Experimental Teaching Model of Adaptable Talent Cultivation in Biology, and the Guangdong Province Graduate Student Joint Training Demonstration Base. The department has a teaching laboratory of 1292 square meters and teaching instruments and equipment worth over 14 million yuan. In the past three years, the faculty of the Department of Biology have hosted three provincial educational reform projects, obtained three projects for Guangdong Province's first-class courses, and published or co-edited four textbooks.
The biology discipline of Shantou University has the conferral right for first-degree biological masters. It consists of four discipline orientations, they are Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Neurobiology and Hydrobiology. We have already cultivated more than 300 maters and doctors since we started to enroll postgraduate students from 1995.Step by step, we establish the idea ofWhole Life Cycle Managementfrom the recruitment, training and degree-conferring, employment, etc. The teacher team for this subject is composed of young and energetic professors and doctors, a lot of them have the experience of working on scientific researches for a long time in the famous universities at home and abroad. In recent years, our biology discipline has been undertaking over 50 national and provincial scientific research tasks, including the key project of NSFC(Natural Science Foundation of China), General Programs, National High Technology Research and Development Program of China (863 Project).With well-equipped scientific research facilities and advanced instruments, we have offered favorable conditions to conduct advanced biological research.
