Riding the wind and waves, realizing the dream of sailing on the sea----sophomores majoring in Marine Science successfully finished the marine survey and practice, which is also the scientific expedition voyage about the "Changji Project".

In order to promote the construction of the Marine Science major and provide an opportunity for students to implement marine investigation and practice, Marine and Life Sciences of the College of Science rented the "China Maritime Surveillance 203", a scientific research vessel of the Third Institute of Oceanography of the Ministry of Natural Resources to carry out marine investigation and practice for sophomores in Marine Science major through visits and research. On July 3rd, the five-day marine survey and practice, which is also the scientific expedition voyage about the "Changji Project" was successfully finished.

Faced the complex environment on the sea, 79 teachers and students from Marine and Life Sciences monitored the basic parameters of the ocean temperature, salinity, nutrient phytoplankton taxa and other basic parameters in the summer of the sea area in eastern Guangdong at 12 survey stations around the eastern Guangdong waters, and obtained a large number of valuable data and samples, covering marine hydrological conditions monitoring (physical ocean), hydrochemical conditions (marine chemistry), biodiversity investigation (marine biology), Seabed sedimentary environment survey (marine geology) and other aspects.

Overcame the physical and mental difficulty on the voyage.

During this expedition, teachers and students overcame seasickness, fatigue, and other physical discomforts, completed various tasks, and showed extraordinary resilience and tenacity. The five-day expedition benefited students physically and psychologically, which provided them with the potential to conduct marine scientific research in the future.

Immersed in marine scientific research

Through this expedition, the students gained an in-depth understanding of the entire process of marine scientific research, from the preparation of sailing to sampling on the sea, and from sample procession to data analysis. Under the guidance of Prof. Ping Li, Prof. Hong Du, Dr. Qiang Lian, Dr. Tangcheng Li and other teachers, the students learned how to conduct scientific research in a real environment, and also improved teamwork and problem-solving skills while accumulating valuable practical experience. The study tour was a combination of theory and practice, which allowed students to significantly improve their professional quality and skills by learning in practice and practice in learning.

Inherited the spirit of the sea

This expedition allowed students to feel the charm and challenge of marine science. On the boundless ocean, they felt the greatness of nature and the insignificance of human beings , realizing the importance of teamwork and the hardships of scientific exploration. The students learned professional knowledge and understood the true meaning of the spirit of sailing. One of the students Jiang Ruolin said, "I chose to go on the voyage not only because I was attracted by the vastness and freedom of the ocean, but also because it gave me the opportunity to grow and explore infinite possibilities. Wang Fengqi, the deputy secretary of the Party Committee of the Collge of Science , who also went on the voyage said, “Despite the difficulty in sailing on the sea, the crew, teachers and students have always held a positive and optimistic attitude, the confidence to work hard, the spirit of cooperation and the belief of striving in the sea." This expedition not only allowed students to learn how to face difficulties and challenges, but also inspired their passion for marine science and the spirit of exploration.

Riding the wind and waves, realizing the dream of sailing on the sea. Taking advantage of the "Changji Project", the Marine and Life Sciences will provide a bigger platform for more aspiring young people to conduct scientific research, encouraging them to devote themselves to marine research and to make contribution to the construction of a strong marinetime nation, which will inject new vitality and impetus into the development of marine science!
