The ultrahigh electric field of ultrashort mid-infrared laser pulses (6-100 THz frequency) can drive phonon excitations into a nonlinear regime. In this regime, typically negligible anharmonic phonon-phonon interactions become significant, exerting substantial and abrupt forces on the material's state. This phenomenon, known as nonlinear phononics, highlights the importance of these interactions in the dynamic response of materials to intense laser fields. The non-destructive nature of these ultrahigh fields in ultrashort pulses allows for probing systems with significantly larger
responses than static technology and enables ultrafast state switching from femtoseconds to picoseconds. This makes nonlinear phononics a pioneering approach for engineering and manipulating functional materials. In this talk, I will present our theoretical understanding of how terahertz light interacts with ferroelectric materials in the nonlinear regime, focusing on the squeezing and nonthermal quenching effects resulting from these phononic interactions.
