Introduction to the Department of Chemistry

The Department of Chemistry consists of 22 academic staffs, including one Distinguished Young Scholar and one New Century Excellent Talent named by the National Natural Science Foundation and Ministry of Education, respectively. According to the latest data released by Thomson Reuters, The Department of Chemistry of Shantou University ranks among the top 1% of ESI (Essential Science Indicators) International Discipline Ranking of universities and scientific research institutions. In the past 5 years, the department has undertaken more than 40 research projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation, Ministry of Science and Technology, Ministry of Education, Department of Education of Guangdong Province, local governments and industrial enterprises, of which 6 are key projects. The total amount of funds reaches RMB 25 million (ca. US$ 4 million). Our faculty members have published around 200 peer-reviewed papers in various prestigious international journals, of which more than 50 are in high-impact-factor journals (> 4.0). The department also has a very strong commitment to obtaining and maintaining state-of-the-art instrumentation for analysis and spectroscopy. The available instruments include 400 MHz NMR spectrometer, X-ray diffractometers, Raman spectrometer, circular dichroism spectrometer, scanning electron microscope, scanning probe microscope, elemental analyzer, UV-Vis-NIR spectrophotometers, FTIR spectrometers, fluorescence spectrophotometers, etc.

Undergraduate program

The undergraduate program awards Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree in Applied Chemistry. An undergraduate in our department can be tailored to focus on two different sub-disciplines-Materials Chemistry and Analytical Sciences. Materials Chemistry aims at the design, synthesis and processing of new inorganic, polymer and functional materials. Analytical Sciences aims at theoretical and practical aspects of modern analytical methods. Our undergraduate program provides a rigorous education in the fundamental areas of chemical theory and experimentation along with a hands-on approach to modern laboratory practices and instrumentation underwritten by a balanced introduction to the basic divisions of chemistry that emphasizes problem-solving skills. This solid foundation in the chemical sciences and experiential learning prepares our students to be competitive in pursuit of careers in academia, professional programs, industry, and government.
